Tamil Wedding Day Timeline: A Photographer's Guide

By Vijay, Founder of Impixer Photography, Salem

A sample Tamil wedding day timeline from getting ready to reception, where time gets lost, and how to plan family photos and couple portraits.

A Tamil wedding day timeline for photography is a schedule that gives your photographers time for every ritual, family group and couple portrait without rushing the ceremony. Most Tamil weddings centre on a morning muhurtham, so the photography day often begins before sunrise. This guide shows a sample timeline, explains where time usually gets lost and how to protect the moments you care about.

It is based on Impixer Photography's experience covering more than 200 weddings across Salem and Tamil Nadu since 2018.

What does a sample Tamil wedding day timeline look like?

Every family's customs and muhurtham differ, but a typical morning muhurtham wedding with an evening reception looks like this:

TimeWhat happensWhat to photograph
4:30–6:00 amBride and groom getting readyMakeup, jewellery, saree draping, the groom's preparation, details
6:00–6:45 amPre-ceremony ritualsPrayers, elders' blessings, the bride's family emotions
6:45–8:30 amMuhurtham and main ritualsKanyadaanam, thaali, akshathai, saptapadi, close-ups and reactions
8:30–10:00 amStage greetings and family groupsEvery family group, guests greeting the couple
10:00–10:30 amCouple portraitsA quiet 15–30 minutes away from the stage
AfternoonRest, grihapravesam in some familiesArrival at the groom's home, aarthi
6:30–10:00 pmReceptionEntry, stage portraits, family groups, candid moments, same-day reel

Where does time usually get lost on a wedding day?

Time on a Tamil wedding day is usually lost in three places:

  1. Getting ready runs late. Makeup and draping often take 30 to 45 minutes longer than planned. Build that buffer into the schedule.
  2. Stage greetings run long. With hundreds of guests, the stage queue can take two hours or more. Plan family group photos before the general queue starts.
  3. Couple portraits get skipped. If no one protects a 15-minute window, it disappears. Ask a relative to guard it.

How do we organise family group photographs?

Family group photographs go fastest when someone prepares a written list in advance:

  • Write the groups in order, starting with the closest family and working outwards.
  • Give the list to one relative from each side who knows everyone by name.
  • Take elders' groups first so they are not kept standing.
  • Agree how many groups to take on stage and which can wait for the reception.

When is the best time for couple portraits?

The best time for couple portraits on a Tamil wedding day is either shortly after the muhurtham rituals, while makeup is fresh, or in the soft light before the reception. Even 15 minutes away from the crowd gives you the calm, intimate photographs the stage cannot.

What should we send our photographer before the wedding?

  • The final timeline with the muhurtham time and venue addresses
  • The order of rituals followed by both families
  • A list of family groups and the names of key relatives
  • Contacts for the decorator, makeup artist and one family coordinator
  • Any must-have moments or people

Frequently asked questions

What time should the photographer arrive on the wedding day?

The photographer should arrive at least 60 to 90 minutes before the first ritual, usually during getting-ready, so that preparation and details are covered without rushing.

How many photographers do we need for a Tamil wedding?

Most Tamil weddings need a candid photographer and a traditional photographer at minimum, plus cinematographers for video. Larger weddings use a team of 4 to 8 people.

Should the photographer cover the reception separately?

If the reception is on a different day or venue, plan it as a separate event in your package so the team, timing and travel are covered.
