Pre-Wedding Shoot Outfit Ideas for Tamil Couples
By Vijay, Founder of Impixer Photography, Salem
What to wear for a pre-wedding shoot: traditional and modern outfit ideas for Tamil couples, colours that suit each location and what to avoid.
The best pre-wedding shoot outfits are ones that suit the location, photograph well in natural light and still feel like you. Most couples plan two looks: one traditional and one contemporary. This guide covers colour choices, outfit pairings for Tamil couples, what to avoid and how to plan outfit changes around the light.
The advice comes from Impixer Photography's pre-wedding and post-wedding shoots in Yercaud, Hogenakkal, Mettur, Kolli Hills and around Salem.
How many outfits should we bring to a pre-wedding shoot?
Two outfits are ideal for a single-location pre-wedding shoot, and three is the practical maximum. Every change takes 15 to 20 minutes, and changes eat into the best light of the day. Two well-chosen looks give you variety without losing the golden hours.
What colours photograph best?
Solid, rich colours photograph best for pre-wedding shoots, and they work better than busy prints. Match the colours to the location:
| Location | Colours that stand out | Colours to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Hills and tea estates (Yercaud, Valparai) | Maroon, mustard, cream, deep blue | Green, which disappears into the background |
| Waterfalls and rivers (Hogenakkal) | Red, orange, white, pastel pink | Grey and muddy browns |
| Temples and heritage streets | Silk in gold, magenta, emerald | Neon colours and sportswear |
| Lakes and sunsets (Mettur) | White, ivory, soft blush | Black, which loses detail in backlight |
Coordinate rather than match: if the bride wears maroon, the groom in cream or beige looks better than both in identical maroon.
What are good traditional outfit ideas for Tamil couples?
- Bride: a Kanjivaram or soft silk saree with temple jewellery and fresh jasmine; or a half-saree (pavadai davani) for a younger, playful look.
- Groom: a silk veshti with a matching shirt and angavastram, or a kurta in a colour that complements the saree.
- Locations that suit it: temples, old houses with pillared verandas, heritage streets and paddy fields.
What are good modern outfit ideas?
- Bride: a flowing gown or maxi dress in a solid colour, or a simple Indo-western set.
- Groom: a linen shirt with chinos, or a suit without a tie for a relaxed look.
- Locations that suit it: hill viewpoints, lakes, cafes and open fields.
What should we avoid wearing?
- Large logos, slogans and busy patterns
- Brand-new shoes you have not walked in
- Very tight outfits that make walking and sitting hard
- Heavy makeup that looks different in daylight. Natural, long-wear makeup photographs best outdoors.
How do we plan outfit changes around the light?
Plan the shoot around the two golden hours: the first two hours after sunrise and the last two hours before sunset. Start with the outfit you care about most so it gets the best light, and change during the harsher midday hours if the shoot runs through the day. For a full-day shoot, a common plan is traditional in the morning at a temple or heritage spot and modern in the evening at a viewpoint or lake.
Frequently asked questions
Should we hire a makeup artist for the pre-wedding shoot?
It is worth it for the bride, especially for outdoor shoots that last several hours. Ask for long-wear, natural makeup and carry blotting papers for touch-ups.
Can we bring props?
Yes, but keep them meaningful and few: a vintage scooter, flowers, a save-the-date board or something personal to your story.
