Newborn Photoshoot Guide for Salem Parents

By Vijay, Founder of Impixer Photography, Salem

When to book a newborn photoshoot, what happens during the session, how it is kept safe and how to prepare for a home newborn shoot in Salem.

A newborn photoshoot is a gentle portrait session of a baby in the first weeks of life, usually between 5 and 14 days old, when babies sleep deeply and curl up naturally. This guide explains the best timing, what to expect on the day, how to keep the session safe and calm, and how to prepare your home if you choose a home session in Salem.

Impixer Photography photographs newborns, babies and first birthdays for families across Salem and nearby cities, with the same natural, candid style we bring to weddings.

When should we do a newborn photoshoot?

The best time for a newborn photoshoot is between 5 and 14 days after birth. In those first two weeks most babies sleep soundly and are easy to settle in curled, womb-like positions. After about three weeks babies are more alert and wakeful. The session is still lovely, but the photographs look different: open eyes and stretches rather than sleepy curls.

Contact your photographer before your due date so a slot can be held, then confirm the exact date once your baby arrives.

What happens during a newborn session?

A newborn session is slow by design. A typical session:

  1. Starts with a feed, so the baby is full and sleepy.
  2. Begins with photographs of the baby wrapped or in a simple outfit.
  3. Moves to family photographs: mother and baby, father and baby, siblings and grandparents.
  4. Includes detail photographs: tiny fingers and toes, the hospital tag, a family heirloom.
  5. Pauses whenever the baby needs feeding, changing or comforting.

Most newborn sessions take two to three hours because of these pauses. Older babies and milestone sessions usually take about an hour.

How do you keep a newborn photoshoot safe?

A newborn photoshoot is safe when the baby's comfort and safety come before any pose. At Impixer we follow a few simple rules:

  • A parent stays within arm's reach of the baby at all times.
  • The room is kept warm, and the baby is never left unattended on any surface.
  • No pose requires a baby to balance or hold its own weight. Popular "composite" poses that look like a baby is propped up are not attempted.
  • Natural window light is used wherever possible instead of bright flashes close to the baby's face.
  • Anyone handling the baby washes their hands first, and props are clean and soft.
  • If the baby will not settle, we wait, or we try again another day.

Should we do the newborn photoshoot at home?

Many Salem families choose a home newborn session because the baby and mother stay in familiar surroundings and nothing needs to be packed. To prepare:

  • Choose a room with a large window and clear a small area near it.
  • Keep the room warm and turn off fans blowing directly on the baby.
  • Keep two or three soft, plain wraps or blankets in neutral colours ready.
  • Have feeding things, nappies and wipes within reach.

What about milestone and first-birthday shoots?

Babies change every few weeks. Many families book short milestone sessions at three, six and nine months (first smile, sitting up, crawling) and a first-birthday shoot to finish the year. A cake-smash or themed setup is fun for the first birthday, but simple portraits with parents and grandparents are often the photographs families treasure most.

Frequently asked questions

Can we do a newborn shoot after one month?

Yes. Babies older than a month are more awake, so the photographs show open eyes and expressions rather than sleepy curled poses. Both are beautiful.

Do siblings and grandparents join the newborn shoot?

Yes, and they should. Family photographs are usually taken early in the session, before younger siblings get tired.

Can the newborn shoot be combined with the naming ceremony?

Yes. Many families combine portraits with coverage of the naming ceremony or cradle ceremony on the same day.
